What Color is ______?

What Color is ______? takes place during the 2018 Wisconsin Science Festival and is facilitated by Stuart Flack. Children, teens, and adults “answer” a 25-question survey using 2″ x 4″ LEGO® blocks of various colors from a standard LEGO® set. The questions run the gamut from mundane to poetic.

Each participant’s survey responses are encoded and stored in a 25-block stack particular to that individual. Arranged next to each other in the windows of the Discovery Building, the thousands of resulting 25-block stacks form a wall of information. The wall can be “read” to allow visual comparison, pattern recognition of answer trends, and other analyses. A simple Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithm “translates” the color and order of blocks into a data set for real-time manipulation and further analysis.
